Materials Required:

1. Pool Filter Sand (recommended: high-rated number like 20 silica sand)
2. Silicon Lubricant
3. Screwdriver or Drill
4. Filter Sand Extractor or Scoop
5. Face Mask (optional)

10 Steps Method to change sand in Hayward pool filter

1. Identify How Much Sand Requires?

Check the filter model plate and note How much sand is needed for this process.

2. Turn Off The Pump

Turn off the pump to ensure safety during the process.

3. Drain The Filter Tank

Set the valve to the “backwash” position.

Now release the pressure by opening the pressure release valve. Remove the Drain plug to remove water completely from the filter tank.

4. Open the Filter Tank

Unscrew the top cover to open the tank and access the sand bed.

5. Remove the Multiport Valve

Disconnect the pump, return, and waste hoses fixed to the multiport valve at the top of your Hayward Sand filter. If your filter doesn’t have a union, Cut the piping if necessary.

6. Tape the Vertical StandPipe

Tape the standpipe to the sand filter to prevent sand entering from it.

7. Remove Old Pool Filter Sand

Add some water to the filter then use a scoop or a portable wet/dry vacuum to remove the old sand, DO NOT damage the filter fingers.

Remove extra sand with a garden hose, and check your filter is clean. Now Clean the filter fingers carefully.

8. Add New Pool Filter Sand

Replace the drain cap and fill the tank halfway with water.

Gently add new filter sand, filling the tank up to 75% of capacity.

I recommend you use a high-rated number like 20 silica sand.

9. Replace the Multiport Valve

Remove tape from the sand pipe and reassemble the multiport valve as it was situated earlier.

10. Reassemble Tank and Test:

Replace the O-ring with industrial silicon lubricant (If it is damaged then replace it), and cover the outlet cover with a screwdriver.

Now, Backwash the sand filter to ensure proper functioning.
